Dutch(Nederlands) - an official language of the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, and the Netherlands Antilles - is a West Germanic language most closely related to Low and High German and spoken by mainly in the Netherlands and the northern Belgium(Flanders - the Dutch dialect in Belgium is known as Flemish). There are small Dutch-speaking communities in northern France around Dunkirk(Dunkerque - Duinkerke). In South Africa, Dutch was an official language up until 1961. The English name 'Dutch' derives from the old Dutch word 'Duyts(ch) - Duits in German', which means 'from the people'. The standard Dutch is now Standaardnederlands or Algemeen Nederlands('Common Dutch' - AN), the old name Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands('general civilized Dutch' - ABN). |
| Afrikaans(one of the official language of South Africa - South Africa has total 11 official languages) is a Low Franconian language of West Germanic language group mainly spoken in South africa and Namibia. Afrikaans has its roots in seventeenth and eighteenth century Dutch dialects spoken in North and South Holland but it has been influenced by many languages including English, Malay, German, Portuguese, French and some other African languages. Afrikaans(The name Afrikaans comes from the Dutch word for "African.") is the first language of South Africa's "Whites" and the "Coloured" (mixed-race) population. It was originally used by the Dutch settlers and their slave workers brought to the Cape area in southwestern South Africa by the Dutch East India Company between 1652 and 1705. In 1925 Afrikaans was officially proclaimed to be a distinct language from a slang version of Dutch. |
