Czech (Čeština) - the official language in the Czech Republic - is a Western Slavonic language spoken in the Czech Republic and is very close to Slovak.
Most adult Czechs and Slovaks are still able to understand each other without difficulty.
The region where Czech is spoken(Common Czech) is traditionally called Bohemia.
In medieval times, Czech was considered as one of the most important international languages.
Independence Day - 17 July
In 1992 the Declaration of Independence of Slovakia is adopted and the Constitution was signed at the Bratislava Castle but the independence came only on 1st January 1993.

Slovak(Slovenský) - one of the Western Slavonic languages - is spoken as the official language in Slovakia and is closely related to Czech, Polish and Sorbian.
Since the demise of Czechoslovakia the Slovak and Czech languages have started to drift away from each other, though they are still mutually intellegible and adult educated Slovaks are able to understand Polish and Sorbian to some extent in addition to Czech.
Slovak has three basic dialect groups - Eastern, Central and Western Slovak dialects.
